This audio converter changes a sound file from one format to another, or takes the soundtrack from a video and saves it as audio. You can convert to MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG. It's free, runs in your web browser and doesn't need an account.
People usually come here because a file won't play or won't upload. A voice memo saved as M4A gets rejected by a form that only takes MP3, or a WAV recording from a microphone is too large to email. Converting the file to a better-suited format fixes both.
The four output formats
| Format | What it's like | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Compressed, small, plays almost everywhere | Sharing, phones, music players, uploads |
| WAV | Uncompressed, large, full detail | Editing, recording software, archiving |
| M4A | Compressed, common on Apple devices | iPhone, iTunes, Apple apps |
| OGG | Compressed, open format | Some games, websites and Android apps |
If you just need something that plays on any device, choose MP3. If you're going to edit the audio in a program that prefers uncompressed sound, choose WAV. M4A is a sensible choice when the file is going to an iPhone or a Mac, since Apple's own apps play it and it stays fairly small. OGG is mostly worth picking when a game, website or app you're working with asks for it by name.
How to convert audio online
- Upload your file. On a computer, drag it onto the page; on a phone, tap "Select files".
- Under "Convert to", choose MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG.
- Start the conversion.
- Download the converted file.
You can upload audio files or video files. When you upload a video, the converter keeps only its sound and saves it in the format you picked.
WAV to MP3 and M4A to MP3
Two conversions come up again and again.
WAV files hold sound without compression. That's great for recording and editing but makes the files heavy, often many times bigger than an MP3 of the same recording. Converting WAV to MP3 gives you a file that's far easier to email, upload or keep on a phone.
M4A is the format many iPhones and Apple apps use for voice memos and music. It sounds good, but some websites, older players and Windows programs don't accept it. Converting M4A to MP3 gets around that.
Who needs to convert audio
A student records an interview for a research project on an iPhone and the university's upload page only accepts MP3. Someone who records a podcast in WAV and needs an MP3 to publish. A teacher has listening exercises in OGG and wants them in MP3 so every pupil's phone can play them. A small business owner has a voice greeting for a phone system that asks for WAV.
Musicians use it too, for example to turn a rough MP3 demo into WAV so it opens in their editing software, or to get the soundtrack out of a rehearsal video. And if someone sends you a sound file that your phone refuses to open, converting it to MP3 is usually the simplest way to listen to it.
Things to know before you convert
Converting can't add quality that isn't in the original. If you turn a small MP3 into a WAV, the WAV will be much bigger, but it won't sound better, because the detail removed when the MP3 was made doesn't come back. Converting the other way, from WAV to MP3, makes the file smaller and loses some detail in exchange.
This tool has no bitrate settings. If you need to choose the MP3 quality yourself (128, 192 or 320 kbps), use Video to MP3 instead, which accepts audio files as well as videos.
The converter changes the whole file. To keep only part of a recording, cut it with Trim video or audio before or after converting. For changing the format of a video while keeping the picture, the Video converter is the right tool.
Each upload can be up to 100 MB.
Privacy
Your files are processed on our server and deleted as soon as the converted file is sent back to you. We don't store them or share them with anyone. You don't need to sign up, and nothing is added to your audio. The converter works in the browser on Android phones, iPhones and computers running Windows, Mac, Linux or ChromeOS, so there's nothing to download or install.
Frequently asked questions
Is this audio converter free?
Yes. You can convert audio online for free without creating an account. Nothing is added to your converted files.
How do I convert WAV to MP3?
Upload the WAV file, choose MP3 under "Convert to" and start the conversion. When it's done, download your MP3, which will be much smaller than the WAV.
Can I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?
Yes. iPhone voice memos are usually M4A files. Upload the memo, choose MP3 and download the result.
Can I get the audio from a video?
Yes. Upload the video and choose the audio format you want. Only the sound is kept, and the picture is left out.
Will converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound?
No. The WAV will be bigger, but it can only contain the detail that was in the MP3. Convert to WAV when a program asks for that format.
Can I pick the bitrate for MP3?
Not on this tool. Video to MP3 lets you choose 128, 192 or 320 kbps, and it works with audio files too.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, tap "Select files" and choose a file from your phone. The converted file saves to your downloads.
