Trim video or audio

Cut a clip out of a video or song by start and end time.

Long recordings often hold a lot of waiting around, with the useful part a minute or so somewhere in the middle. This tool lets you trim video and audio files by typing a start time and an end time. It cuts out the clip between those two points and gives it back in the same format as your original file, free and without an account.

What you can cut

You can upload one video or one audio file at a time. The tool keeps everything between your start and end times and removes the rest. Because the result stays in the same format, an MP4 comes back as an MP4 and an MP3 comes back as an MP3, ready to use wherever the original worked.

That makes it a simple video cutter for clips from your phone and a quick way to cut MP3 files, such as a song, a voice note or a recorded talk.

How to trim a video

  1. Tap "Select files" on your phone, or drag the file onto the page on a computer.
  2. Type the Start time, where your clip should begin (for example 0:15).
  3. Type the End time, where it should stop (for example 1:30).
  4. Trim the file and download your clip.

With the example times above, you'd get a clip that starts 15 seconds in and ends at one minute 30, so it runs for 1 minute 15 seconds.

Finding the right start and end times

Play the file in your phone's gallery, a media player or your browser before you upload it. Pause where you want the clip to start and note the time on the player, then do the same for the end. Times are written as minutes and seconds with a colon between them, like 0:15 or 1:30.

A few habits make the result look better:

When trimming helps

Plenty of everyday files have more in them than you need. Students record a whole lecture and only want the ten minutes about one topic for revision. Job seekers cut a short self-introduction video down to the length an application asks for. Teachers pull one experiment out of a long lab recording to show in class.

At work, trimming is handy for sharing the one part of a recorded meeting that matters to a colleague, instead of sending the full hour. Small businesses cut product demos into short clips for social media. At home, people trim the shaky start and end off phone videos before sending them to family on WhatsApp.

Audio works the same way. You can cut an MP3 to keep only the chorus of a song you recorded, the answer you need from an interview, or a short sound for a presentation.

Trimming and file size

A shorter clip is also a smaller file, so trimming is often the first step when a video is too big to send. If the trimmed clip is still too large for email or a chat app, run it through Compress video next.

Some other tools pair well with trimming. To turn a few seconds of video into a silent looping image, use Video to GIF. To keep only the sound from your clip as an MP3, use Video to MP3.

Limits to keep in mind

The tool works on one file at a time and keeps one continuous section. To remove a part from the middle and keep both ends, you'd need to trim twice to get two separate clips. It doesn't join clips together.

The output format is always the same as the input. If you need a different format, change it afterwards with the Audio converter or the Video converter.

Each upload can be up to 100 MB, so very long, high resolution videos may be too big to upload.

Privacy

Your file is processed on our server and deleted as soon as the trimmed clip is sent back to you. We don't keep or share your files, and we don't add any watermark or branding to the result. There's no sign-up. The tool runs in the browser on Android phones, iPhones and computers running Windows, Mac, Linux or ChromeOS, so you don't need to install an app.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video trimmer free?

Yes. You can trim video and audio files for free, with no account and no watermark on your clip.

How do I cut a video on my phone?

Open this page in your phone's browser, tap "Select files" and choose the video. Type the start and end times, trim it, and the clip saves to your phone.

Can I cut an MP3 file here?

Yes. Upload the MP3, set the start and end times, and you'll get back a shorter MP3. It works the same way as trimming a video.

What format will my trimmed clip be?

The same format you uploaded. An MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV and an MP3 stays an MP3.

How do I write the start and end times?

Use minutes and seconds separated by a colon, such as 0:15 for the start and 1:30 for the end. The clip keeps everything between those two times.

Can I trim several files at once?

No. The tool takes one video or audio file at a time. Trim each file separately.

Will trimming make my video smaller?

Yes, a shorter clip is a smaller file. If it's still too big to send, compress it afterwards.
