How to merge PDF files
- On a computer, drag your PDFs onto the upload box. On a phone, tap "Select files" and choose them from your storage.
- Add between 2 and 30 PDF files. One upload can be up to 100 MB in total.
- Look at the list and move any file up or down until the order matches how the final document should read.
- Start the merge.
- Download your combined PDF. You get one file back, so there is no ZIP to open.
What happens when you combine PDF files
The tool takes every page of the first file in your list, then every page of the second, and carries on to the bottom. The order of the list becomes the order of the pages in the result. There are no other settings, so the order is the one thing worth checking before you press the button.
This matters more on phones than you might expect. When you pick several files at once from a phone's file browser, they often arrive sorted by date or by name, which may not be the order you had in mind. A quick look at the list saves you from sending a document where page 1 of your CV sits behind your certificates.
The pages inside each file stay in their own order. If one PDF has its pages mixed up, or includes pages you'd rather leave out, fix that file first with Organize PDF or Remove pages, then come back and merge.
When people use it
Job and school applications
Many application portals accept only one upload. You might have a CV, a cover letter and a scanned certificate sitting as separate PDFs. Merge them in the order the employer or school asked for (often the CV or application form goes first) and upload a single file that opens in the right sequence.
Students handing in work
Course websites often want one PDF per assignment. If you scanned each handwritten page separately, or typed one part in Microsoft Word and another in Google Docs, you can join PDF online here and hand in one tidy file.
Office paperwork
A month of invoices, a contract with its appendices, or a set of signed forms is easier to file and forward as one document. When someone else prints it, the pages stay together and in order.
WhatsApp and email
One attachment is easier for the other person to open than eight. Chat apps and email services do have size limits, though, and merging several large PDFs gives you one large PDF. If Gmail or WhatsApp refuses the file, run it through Compress PDF and try again.
Tips and limits
- Rename your files with numbers at the start (01, 02, 03) before uploading. They are much easier to put in order that way.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before they can be merged. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF first.
- The limit is 30 files and 100 MB per upload. For a bigger job, merge in batches, then merge those results together.
- Merge PDF uses every page of every file. To include only certain pages from a document, pull them out first with Extract pages.
- Open the merged file and scroll through it before you send it anywhere important. It takes a minute and catches a file that slipped into the wrong place.
Privacy and your files
Your PDFs are uploaded to our server, merged there, and deleted as soon as the merged file is sent back to you. We don't keep copies and we don't share them with anyone. The result has no watermark or Xon File branding on its pages, so it looks the same as if you had put it together yourself.
The tool runs in your web browser on Android phones, iPhones, and Windows, Mac, Linux or Chromebook computers. There is nothing to download or install.

Is it really free to merge PDF files?
Yes. You can merge PDF free of charge, and you don't need to sign up or log in. The merged document has no watermark added to it.
Can I merge PDFs on my phone?
Yes. Open the page in your phone's browser, tap "Select files" and choose the PDFs from your storage or downloads folder. When the merge is done, the combined file downloads to your phone like any other download.
How many PDFs can I combine at once?
You can combine between 2 and 30 PDF files in one go, up to 100 MB per upload. If you have more than 30, merge them in groups and then merge the group results into one file.
Can I change the order after I've added the files?
Yes. Move each file up or down in the list before you start. The finished PDF follows the list from top to bottom, so whatever is first in the list becomes the first pages of the document.
Why won't my PDF merge?
The usual cause is a password on one of the files. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first, which you can do with Unlock PDF if you know the password. A file that is damaged and won't open in a normal PDF reader may also cause problems, and Repair PDF on Xon File can try to fix it.
Will my merged PDF be stored on your server?
No. The files are deleted from our server as soon as the merged PDF is sent back to you. Nothing is stored or shared.
